Anchorage - Day 1

Thursday July 1, 2013
Our first full day in Anchorage -- we got to sleep in until 8 AM this morning! That didn't really help too much since we didn't get to sleep until very late last night. I think most youth and a few adults were feeling a little jet-lagged today for sure. We had a pretty easy day today so once we got started moving, got showered, put a little food in our stomachs and headed out we were feeling a lot better. One of always entertaining things associated with a youth trip is the shower experience in the different places we go. Our showers here are pretty good, except I think the water heater is located in Denver as it takes quite a while for the water to get warm!  Today we spent part of the day in downtown Anchorage and were able to visit the Alaska Earthquake center and watch a film about the 1964 earthquake that happened on Good Friday at 5:36 PM that year. It was devastating to the town of Anchorage, taking a large portion of the town, homes and people into the ocean as well as creating a large Sunami. We ate lunch at a cool restaurant downtown and then visited the Earthquake Park where a large portion of the Anchorage area broke off during the earthquake and was washed out to the ocean. Some of the youth (and one brave adult leader---who shall remain nameless----JOE) ventured out to the mud flats part of the area ---- yes, I said MUD --- Not sure if it was the experience they were expecting but it will definitely be one they remember forever! Guess who got to do laundry when we returned to the church....Yup, ME! Glad to do it....I have to admit...I had to wash my clothes too. Some of the girls offered to wash everyone's shoes. Good thing I had my old gray tennis shoes instead of my good ones!
Below is a portion of our Daily Journal written by Heather and Becky......

"I really enjoyed going to the earthquake museum and watching the different films. It was interesting hearing some of the survivor's stories on how they dealt with the situation. After spending the day downtown, we came back to the church to find the group from Kansas had arrived and settling in. At first, we were hesitant to meeting the other group. But when dinner came around, everybody became family. It was like we were back in Kindergarten, becoming best friends with kids we met only 5 minutes ago! Back home time was enlightening watching the Calvary Youth opening up with one another and grow closer as a whole. Over all, it was a great way to start off the trip."

Well, over all a pretty successful day on our journey....and we only had to use one band-aid for a stubbed toe, a bunch of bug spray and almost lost a pair of flip flops in a small stream. Don't worry the flip flops were recovered and unharmed in the process!
Thanks for checking in with us! We hope you are enjoying sharing our adventures! Please feel free to leave comments or any greetings to our youth!
Peace and blessings to all.
